What are Chakras?

CHAKRA is a Sanskrit word that means “wheel”. Chakras are known to be spinning wheels of which life energy flows through.

We have seven main chakras (energy centers) in our body that are said to influence our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Each chakra is associated with a specific color frequency, location in the body, and function. Read on to learn more about each chakra…

Root Chakra

Located at the base of the spine, the root chakra is associated with stability, grounding, and basic survival needs like food, shelter, and safety. It governs our lower exrtremities as well as connects us to the earth, helping us to feel secure and centered. Potential issues when imbalanced: fear, insecurity, financial instability, and lack of direction. One can also experience physical distress in the lower extremities when not balanced. Red is the color associated with the root chakra.

Sacral Chakra

The sacral chakra is located just below the navel, connected with the lower abdomen, it’s organs, musculature and pelvic structure. It governs our creativity, sensuality, sexuality, pleasure, and emotional expression. It is linked to the ability to experience joy, pleasure, and intimacy. When im-balanced, one can experience lower back pain, emotional instability, sexual dysfunction, lack of creativity, and have difficulty in forming and/or keeping healthy relationships. The color orange is associated with the sacral chakra.

Solar Plexus Chakra

Yellow is the color of the solar plexus. This chakra is connected to personal power, self-confidence, and the ability to take action. It governs our sense of identity and how we assert ourselves in the world. When not in balance, low self-esteem, lack of willpower, digestive issues and upset, mid-back pain, and feeling powerless may be experienced.

Heart Chakra

The Heart Chakra is the center of love, compassion, and empathy. It governs the ability to give and receive love, forgive, and maintain healthy relationships. It is located right in the center of the chest. Green and sometimes pink are the colors that are associated with the heart chakra. When imbalanced, physical distress in the upper back, chest, breast area and heart, emotional pain such as grief, inability to love or trust, and relationship difficulties may be present.

Throat Chakra

The throat chakra is locaed at the center of the throat and governs communication, self-expression, and truth. It is associated with how we express ourselves verbally and creatively. Potential issues when imbalanced may be difficulty expressing oneself, fear of speaking, sore throat, problems with thyroid, shoulders, jaw, or issues with communication. Blue is the color connected with the throat chakra.

Third Eye (Brow) Chakra

Lack of clarity, confusion, inability to trust one’s intuition, and poor concentration may be present when the thrid eye chakra is unbalanced. It is located on the forehead, between the brows and is linked to our intuition, perception, wisdom, and inner-knowing. Physical symptoms that might be present when unbalanced are headaches, eye and sinus issues. It helps us access our clairvoyant (clear-seeing) abilities and is connected to clarity and insight and the color indigo.

Crown Chakra

Located at the top of the head, the crown chakra is associated with spiritual connection, enlightenment, and the realization of oneness with the universe. It connects us to higher consciousness and divine energy. Potential experiences when not balanced are spiritual disconnection, lack of purpose, depression, and feeling disconnected from the universe or a higher power. Physial distress may show up as fatigue, brain fog, dizziness, vertigo, headaches and poor coordination. White or violet is the color of the crown chakra.

Each chakra is believed to affect specific aspects of life, and balancing them is known to help promote physical, mental, and spiritual health.
